Great people – through their creativity, talent, and willingness to learn—are essential to the success of our company. We seek hardworking, enthusiastic people who are interested in an environment that fosters an entrepreneurial spirit, allows employees to advance based on performance, and rewards them for helping readMedia thrive.

Joining readMedia means enjoying a fluid work environment where your only boundaries are your ability to perform and your willingness to grow. There is no typical corporate hierarchy—no rigid structure or barriers between people, departments, or ideas.

We prize intellectual curiosity, self-direction, and enthusiasm for work above all. We’re much less interested in the “right” resume than the right set of talents and capabilities. We look for a diverse range of individuals in our search for employees. We like to see analytical ability, indepencence, and a record of success at whatever you’ve done; a varied, interesting background gets our attention. We welcome the past experience and unique perspective each individual brings to our collective culture at readMedia.

readMedia loves interns and grants the best ones real responsibility and meaningful experience running a company. We accept internship proposals throughout the year and are happy to work with your school to match whatever for-credit programs are in place.

If you see yourself succeeding in our environment, please drop us a line and describe what you like about our business and how you’d like to contribute.

Account representative

readMedia is looking for a motivated, ambitious account rep who wants to sell a great product, help to grow a successful, early-stage business, and have the opportunity for lots of personal and professional growth—all at a company that hates face time, takes care of co-workers, and loves customers. You’ll be selling readMedia’s web-based application for press release distribution, which has been designed to be simple, usable, and rewarding. Most of your selling will be over the phone to non-specialist users, so you must be comfortable engaging people in a solution-based sale.

We are not looking for “killers”: readMedia’s strength is solving problems for clients and taking good care of them. Every sale is the beginning of a long-term relationship. That said, you must be able to close business and consistently grow revenue, prospect for new business, and develop effective ways to scale your activities.

readMedia likes to hire people that fit a certain profile:

  • You are self motivated: there is not a lot of structure or micro-management here. You’ll have all the rope you need to lasso the moon, or hang yourself.
  • You get things done: we care about results, not the appearance of results.
  • You are smart: You must be able to learn new things quickly and comprehensively, adjust to new ideas, and be very comfortable with technology.
  • You like to succeed: You should like the feeling of being on a winning team, and want to be a key player.

In general, these qualities are more important that a specific resume, but we would like to see people who have:

  • A demonstrable history of meeting or exceeding sales targets, managing a pipeline, and prospecting for new business;
  • Experience selling technical solutions to nontechnical users, or who have a background in public relations;
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills (this is a must for the position).

You will love being a part of readMedia’s team. There is a lot of opportunity, a really sane work environment, and the prospect of doing very well in a high-growth company. We offer health and dental, a 401(k) with matching, and equity and bonus plans.

Be sure to send us a cover letter with your resume: it’s required! Tell us a bit about yourself and what you believe you can bring to readMedia and send it to jobs@readmedia.com.

Software developer

readMedia is looking for a great developer to join our team and help us take over the world. We’re a profitable, fast-growing company that is solving problems for paying customers today and we’re on a path to revolutionize a large industry segment.

You will have a lot of freedom and responsibility, and there is a lot of room to grow in the company. You must be self-motivated and able to excel without someone looking over your shoulder all of the time. We prefer people who are intellectually curious and like to solve problems. Ideally, you’ll be curious about the business side of what we do and play a role beyond your day-to-day responsibilities. These qualities are more important than experience, but experience can help tell us if you’ve got those qualities.

Specifically, we’re looking for:

  • B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Ruby, Ruby on Rails, AJAX , Javascript (Prototype), HTML/CSS, Subversion, and open source in general are a must.
  • MySQL, Capistrano, Mongrel, Linux, Memcache, Apache, and XML are all good to have.
  • Strong understanding of usability, accessibility, architecture and design.
  • Unit testing, MVC, and other design patterns.
  • It’s great if you’re interested in working with AWS services and the like.
  • Self-directed, methodical, and detail-oriented.
  • Very good communications skills: you’ve got to be able to describe what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and discuss the best ways to get things done.

We subscribe to the Joel Spolsky criteria for all of our employees: people who are 1. Smart, and 2. Get Things Done. What readMedia offers in return for your contributions are a very competitive salary and bonus, equity, a workplace that encourages you to have a life of your own, and people who appreciate what you can do.

Of course you’ll also get health and dental, paid holidays, a 401(k) matching plan, paid parking, and a cool looking office.

Open source web programming internship

We’re looking for a bright, intellectually curious problem solver who loves to write great code. This is a paid part-time job/internship during the school year, and could become a paid summer position leading to a full-time job. We’re also open to a full-time position for the right person.

We require a writing sample from every applicant—it can be a school assignment, personal essay, fiction or anything else that will show us that you can communicate clearly. You must send us a cover letter, at least, to be considered. What we offer:

  • A chance to write web applications that address a real market need and an existing (and growing) customer base in an industry segment that’s undergoing lots of exciting change. You will be an innovator in this business
  • A recently launched application to learn from, enhance, and extend along a well-defined product roadmap that leaves plenty of room for you to be creative but isn’t a pie-in-the-sky project
  • A company where we’re using Ruby on Rails, MySQL and other open source components to create our great products
  • The opportunity to make money while at school while either honing your talents for a full-time job, or even have a job waiting for you with us when you’re ready

What you’ve got:

  • A great brain and strong work ethic: you’re smart, you understand and empathize with problems that need solving, and then you solve them elegantly and completely
  • Demonstrated ability to create web-based applications using open-source code generally, and Linux, BSD and PHP particularly, and an awareness of companies who are using and innovating with these tools. Knowledge of Ruby on Rails a plus, willingness to learn it required. We’ll ask to see something you’ve made
  • Passion for what you do: we are excited about our work and about building a great business. You should be passionate about your work and feel energized by doing it well

This position requires someone who can manage his or her own time well. You will not be working under the direction of a senior technical team. You’ll be building on the work of talented developers who are on-site, but working on other projects. You will be in direct, daily contact with a senior management team who can provide clear business and product guidance, but it will be your responsibility to add your knowledge and vision and then see that through to deployed code. If you’d like to work on this with a friend who also fits the bill, bring him or her along. And once we’ve gotten comfortable with each other and the work, you’re free to work from campus or wherever you’re comfortable.
